Every home built by Habitat Maui is a partnership between hundreds of volunteers, organizations, donors, and families.
The homes that your group will be helping with are in an area called Keokea-Waiohuli in Kula. These properties are owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. Habitat for Humanity Maui, Inc. has partnered with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands in building homes on Hawaiian lands for Hawaiian lessees.
In order to qualify for property on Hawaiian Home Lands, the lessee must be “native Hawaiian” which is defined as an individual having not less than one-half (50%) Hawaiian ancestry. The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands have already awarded homes to more than 10,000 native Hawaiians throughout the Hawaiian Islands. There are currently over 29,000 native Hawaiians on its waiting list.
Habitat for Humanity serves families who make between 25-80% of the county’s median income. Qualifying partner families are required to take home ownership classes, and to contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” or volunteer service hours on their own home or in the Habitat Re-Store. The mortgage payments that they make monthly to Habitat for Humanity are prorated based on income. An average monthly mortgage payment is under $500 for a partner family. Habitat for Humanity Maui fundraises to cover the building costs via grants, galas, golf tournaments and through direct mailing and online fundraising campaigns.
